Those Thrifty Scots Strike Again!

The people of Scotland have long enjoyed a reputation for thrift and frugality. The economy in the UK is in chaos but those thrifty Scots have figured out a way to have fun for little money. To put it simply, many in Scotland have re discovered the joys of bingo, both offline and online.

A recent survey taken in the Parliamentary district of Fife revealed that younger women under 30 were going out less to pubs, clubs, and restaurants, and were spending more time at local bingo halls or playing online bingo. Given the state of the UK economy this is not surprising when the average cost of an evening out is taken into consideration. On an average night out a young lady may spend 25 to 50 Pounds. (US $37-$73)

Even though businesses in Fife are suffering because of the economic downturn local bingo halls are booming. Statistics show that 25% of all bingo players in local bingo halls are women under 30. Dunfermline hairdresser Sinead Walls stated, “I go with my boyfriend or parents. I went when it opened up, enjoyed it and have gone ever since. It’s always a bonus when you win but you can have a drink at the weekends as well. It’s not better than going out on the town but it is a cheaper night.”

Christina Mcelhinney, manager of the Forth Bingo Club in Rosyth, explained that advances in technology as well as the opportunity to win money is encouraging more young people than ever before to try the game. Some managers stated that the opportunity to win money was a big factor drawing younger players.

The ultra thrifty are playing online bingo. Online bingo requires no transportation costs and can be played from the comfort of home. Throw in a couple of drinks for good cheer and you have a very inexpensive and entertaining evening. The increase in the number of young female players is expected to draw more young male bingo players. After all, if there are no women to be found in the pubs the men will migrate to where the women are, or so the theory goes.

Once again the thrifty Scots show the world how to have a good time for a pittance. Given the state of the global economy it won’t be long before others follow the example of the thrifty Scots.
